Job Summary
The Lab Manager provides overall leadership of the nine CTSI Biospecimen Processing Labs (BSPL), and directly manages the team of lab technicians & onsite day-to-day operations of six of the labs. The projects facilitated by the BSPL require blood, urine and other body fluid processing from human research subjects enrolled in clinical trials. The incumbent serves as a lead and role model for the BSPL, through management and responsibility for the administration of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. Management of the sample processing laboratory includes personnel recruitment, development, performance management & training, stepping in to provide coverage for gaps in staffing; interacting with many different study groups regarding their protocols; attending protocol in-services to assure that samples are ordered appropriately; liaise with nursing staff regarding sample collection; and implementing and maintaining a bar-coded based sample inventory and tracking system. In partnership with the BSPL Associate Director, the incumbent will oversee and assist in the transition and updating of the current inventory system to the MBioLIMs data software.
Additionally, the manager has responsibility for standardization of policies and procedures to ensure harmonious workflow and adherence to regulatory guidelines. She/he is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of new protocols, which includes assisting with the budget preparation. The manager works closely with the BSPL Associate Director in making recommendations and implementing improvements to sample processing practices. The incumbent assists with cost recovery activities, including preparing budgets for study protocols and preparing monthly billing reports. The role works under limited supervision and requires a high level of independence and sound decision-making skills.

Department Description
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is a large, highly complex research unit within the Office of the AVC-CR that spans the four UCSF health science schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Dentistry), the UCSF Graduate Division, and collaborating affiliates of UCSF. The mission of CTSI is to facilitate clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. CTSI does this by providing infrastructure, services, and training to make research more efficient. CTSI develops broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional, and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment. CTSI has $25-$28M in annual funding from multiple sources (NIH, institutional, philanthropy, industry and other) and includes 20 interdisciplinary programs.
The clinical component of CTSI, Clinical Research Services (CRS) integrates the activities of multiple clinical research sites that provide adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support the translation of promising clinical research ideas into successful protocols. CRS provides an array of core research services such as adult and pediatric nursing services, phlebotomy, and biospecimen processing. The Biospecimen Processing Lab (BSPL), a part of CRS, collects, processes, stores, and distributes bio specimens for research. The BSPL functions as a common biorepository for human biospecimens derived from patients who have consented to participate in clinical trials and research studies and are undergoing cancer treatments, surgeries, and other medical procedures.
