Summary

Responsible for supervising all general horticulture maintenance activities to ensure the highest possible quality and standards. In addition will supervise all medians and rights-of-way (ROW) and will be responsible for supervising pesticide spraying, turf maintenance, littler control, and work performed by City crews and outside contractors.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience.

Number of Direct Reports Include (titles): Horticulture Crew Lead, Medians/ROW Crew Lead, Horticulture/Urban Forestry Technicians, Grounds Attendants and, Equipment Operators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Create and disseminate work schedules using Cartegraph work order management system.

  • Complete employee performance appraisals, track necessary training needs, and work with Park Leadership to provide resources for horticulture team members to improve their horticulture knowledge and skills.

  • Coordinate and creates areas designs, seasonal themes, and research and development of new plant species.

  • Manages and oversees all Greenhouse and Tree Farm operations.

  • Oversee and evaluate maintenance and care needs of the Cities medians and ROW's, including mowing and spraying City grounds, litter collection and pest control.

  • Inspect all work in progress and completed by staff and outside contractors.

  • Review and respond to all service requests. Document and compile monthly reports.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance on equipment to assure equipment is in proper working order.

  • Monitor expenditures and procurement of parts and supplies. Maintain records of equipment inventory, materials and supplies ordered and pesticides used.

  • Interview and hire prospective employees.

  • May perform duties of subordinate staff members as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Bachelor's degree (BA) / associate degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year College or Technical school in Horticulture, Urban Forestry, Landscape Architecture, or related field preferred.

  • 5 years related experience

  • 1-year experience in a leadership or supervisory role

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • 5-7 years of Horticulture, Urban Forestry, Landscape, Grounds Maintenance upkeep experience or related experience.

  • 1-2 years' experience in a leadership or supervisory role.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of pesticide and chemical application safety practices and procedures

  • Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and safety methods and procedures

  • Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of horticulture, turf and landscape management

  • Skill using a variety of tools and equipment appropriate to the work assigned

  • Skill using a variety of computer programs to generate reports including Microsoft Office's Excel, Word and Outlook

  • Ability to organize materials, equipment and subordinates in the completion of projects

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license required

  • Certified Arborist preferred

  • TDA Applicators license require, or ability to attain within 6-months of hire

Exposed to physical exertion such as bending, lifting, stooping, reaching, pulling, and pushing. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
