Overview

The Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for a wide range of accounting support as it relates to balance sheet reconciliations, review general journal entries, review monthly property tax accrual, sales tax filings, and fixed asset reports. This position also performs multi-state tax technical research for various industry related transactions, which entails documentation of the states' laws regarding taxability of these items and maintaining all records to support company taxability position. Although this position is generally subject to moderate direct supervision, a degree of creativity, latitude and independent problem-solving is expected.

Success in this role involves effectively participating in and leading various tactical and strategic accounting projects and initiatives and have the ability to identify risk factors, research, consult, and propose solutions to manager.

Responsibilities
    Research, consult and write memos on complicated state, federal, and sales tax issues.
  • Identify potential tax issues and tax planning strategies and make recommendations for changes as needed. Ensure that company policies and procedures are followed and establish the proper techniques to discover and prevent noncompliance.
  • Research, propose and discuss strategies and solutions with Tax Manager. Including monitoring statutes, legislative activity, and tax publications to stay abreast of changes in laws and regulations affecting state, federal, and sales and use tax
  • Interface with external tax partners to ensure effective coordination of all financial accounting and tax reporting activities. This includes preparation of tax provision and related tax workpapers for annual filing.
  • Correspond with the IRS and various state tax commissions concerning filing or tax disputes as authorized.
  • Journal entry preparation and/or review
  • Reconciliation and analysis of various balance sheet and income statement accounts to ensure compliance
  • Review tax basis federal and state fixed assets/depreciation reports
  • Prepare quarterly federal, state, and local estimates for review
  • Review the filing of personal property tax, sales and use tax, federal excise tax and other statutory filings.
  • Keep track of all filing requirements such as tax returns, estimated tax payments, and required elections on a tax calendar. Ensure all requirements are met timely.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Experience within medium to large sized companies that operate in a best practice environment preferred
  • Knowledge of Federal and multi-state sales tax laws and requirements
  • Strong oral and written communication with the ability to successfully interact with accounting, branch operations, and other partners
  • Independent problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail while at the same time able to understand big picture/overall strategy & business impacts
  • Ability to consistently meet rigid and recurring deadlines
  • Ability to utilize online research tools
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional fast-paced environment
  • Strong functional knowledge of industry and industry specific ERP applications and functionality
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate with others.
  • Frequently required to remain in stationary position. Frequently required to operate and use computer and other office equipment.
  • Frequently required to utilize vision to perform tasks such as reviewing spreadsheets, reporting, etc.
  • Occasionally required to move about inside and outside office. May occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
