Hiring Range: $126,568/annual - $142,397/annual
Salary Range: $126,568/annual - $189,862/annual

Position Summary: Ensures the effective management and operation of the Wheeler Opera House including approval of artistic planning, financial management, facility operations, employee management, and provides community leadership consistent with the organization's values, mission and vision statements.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general direction of the Assistant City Manager. Exercises direct supervision over the Business Manager, the Marketing Director, the Production Manager, the Building Supervisor, the Rentals Coordinator, the Programs and Outreach Coordinator, and the Artistic Programmer.

Essential Job Functions:
Artistic and Strategic Planning
* Approves season programming as proposed by Artistic Programmer.
* In conjunction with Wheeler staff, creates annual strategic/work plan ("Compass Plan") for the organization.
Community Outreach/Education Programs

* Provides leadership for growth and development of community outreach programs, as well as educational programming in line with seasonal programming, coordinated by the Wheeler Programs and Outreach Coordinator with the assistance of the Artistic Programmer.
Operations

* In conjunction with Wheeler staff, evaluates building and operational needs to create both short-term and long-term plans and schedules. Ensures that the operations of the Wheeler and its building tenants run smoothly.
Supervision

* Executes leadership and supervision responsibilities through sound judgment, focusing on quality improvement, managing and resolving conflict, fostering a culture of accountability, clearly defining responsibilities and expectations, setting goals, providing motivation and performance feedback, recognizing contributions and encouraging training and development.

Marketing/Branding
* Approves the marketing direction/vision for the Wheeler Opera House developed by the Wheeler Marketing Director. These efforts should position the venue as a world class performing arts center, elevating the brand through promotional efforts, hand in hand with programming.
Financial Management
* Oversees the creation and approval of the annual operating budget through thorough departmental analysis and future planning, defining areas within the operating budget for departmental review and input.
* Adheres to City of Aspen guidelines and timetables, working with the Business Manager to generate all supporting documents for City Council.
* Presents the Wheeler budget to Council during the budget approval review.
* With the Business Manager monitors expenditures and revenues, forecasts and takes necessary budgetary actions as required through the year.
* As appropriate, explores and secures alternate sources of funding for Wheeler capital and programming projects.

City Initiatives
* As a member of the City of Aspen's Department Head Leadership team, participates in monthly meetings, sharing information and direction with Wheeler team.
* Serves as a resource for arts and culture-related City needs.
* Ensures strong connections between Wheeler staff and the broader City team.
* As requested, serves on City teams related to initiatives such as grants programs or other important City priorities.
* Serves as an active member of the City's Compass Plan cohort team, meeting quarterly and participating in evaluation of team plans.

Advisory Board Liaison
* Acts as primary City liaison to the Wheeler Advisory Board, which provides advice on a variety of topics for the Wheeler and its operations and capital needs.
* Works closely with Board Chair to develop agendas, work plans, and strategies to keep the Board engaged.

Community Leadership

* Promotes the Wheeler to attract and maintain occupancy and use of the facility.
* Advocates for the Wheeler Opera House to public officials, public and private organizations, the media and citizens.
* Promotes and maintains popular community support for the Wheeler.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Theatre Management, Art Administration, or a related field. Master's Degree is strongly preferred.
Experience: Seven years of progressively responsible experience in Theatre Management or Theatre Operations with at least five years of direct supervision experience. Experience in a wide variety of arts genres and/or artist booking. board management, and complex financial management necessary.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (Email). Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
Preferred Candidate: Master's Degree in Theatre or Arts Management, or related field. Experience working in a local/municipal government environment preferred.
NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours:
* Regular full time, hours may vary with workload, with weekend show coverage required mainly during fall and winter seasons.
* Evenings/Weekends will be required depending on City Council meetings, department needs and special projects.

* Outdoors/Off-Site: Meetings, trainings, and conferences in a variety of city facilities and areas.
