Overview

The Research Technician is responsible for ensuring proper study conduct while maintaining the well-being of animals in accordance with all standard operating procedures (SOPs), applicable state and federal regulations, as well as guidelines set forth by the veterinary team.

Responsibilities
    General Duties
    • Perform periodic review of all applicable SOPs to ensure accuracy and confirm procedures are being performed according to SOPs. Participate in SOP writing, reviews, and revisions, as needed
    • Complete training requirements as assigned and maintain appropriate training documentation
    • Maintain compliance with all policies and procedures
    • Ensure compliance with GLPs, USDA, AAALAC, OLAW and other applicable regulations
  • In-life Study Conduct
    • Study protocol and notebook review prior to study initiation
    • Dose animals by a variety of routes (including but not limited to: ocular, oral capsule, oral gavage, dermal, SC, IM, IV, IP or intra-articular)
    • Collect and process biological samples, as needed and trained (including but not limited to: blood, synovial fluid, urine or feces)
    • Collect body weights or feed consumption weights
    • Perform pre-operative procedures including but not limited to: pre-medication, inducing anesthesia, installing catheters, prepping surgical/injection sites, etc.
    • Monitor anesthetized animals during surgical or non-surgical procedures
    • Aseptic patient and surgical field preparation
    • Assist in surgical procedures as needed
    • Post-operative recovery, monitoring and care of animals that are used in recovery surgical procedures
    • Surgery instrument preparation and sterilization
    • Keep accurate records of use of medications and controlled substances
    • Euthanize animals and assist with or perform necropsy procedures
    • Complete appropriate raw data records
    • Other procedures as described in the study protocol or defined by SOPs
    • Assist with stocking supplies, maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, monitor supplies for expiration, and notify appropriate employee of items that need to be ordered
    • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Clinical observations and treatments
    • Perform daily clinical observations of the animals and their pens/cages to assure the well-being, health, and sanitation of the cages is adequate
    • Perform in-life study activities, including but not limited to: post-operative monitoring, pain and lameness scoring, sample collection, and observations for adverse effects following administration of the test article
    • Complete appropriate entries into the electronic data collection system or paper records as needed including study procedures, and morbidity or mortality reports
    • Administer treatments
  • Primary technician
    • Responsible for ensuring all procedures are being followed and completed as defined by study protocol and SOPs
    • Attend prestudy meetings to understand the core concept of the study and communicate with the study director on all applicable forms
    • Be the primary contact for the assigned study
    • Prepare study notebook as assigned
    • Ensure study activities are complete and accurate
    • Review study raw data on a regular basis and at the end of the study
  • Equipment owner (As assigned)
    • Ensure all equipment is in working order.
    • Contact proper repair service as needed.
    • Schedule the appropriate preventative maintenance services needed.
    • Maintain paper file for all assigned equipment

  • Proficient in the use of a computer to compile and maintain simple data, spreadsheets, checklists and reports for records and inventory, utilizing the appropriate software.
  • Exhibits an aptitude for quality, an eye for detail, the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Displays a basic understanding of GLP, AAALAC, OLAW regulations and standards with the ability to apply these practices daily.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge and awareness of general laboratory procedures. Maintains a commitment to adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an ability to follow detailed instructions with a sense for scientific method

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S./B.A. in science (biology or life sciences) with 3 years direct laboratory animal work experience, or Associate degree, or equivalent, in science with at least 4 years of direct laboratory animal work experience, or six years of direct laboratory animal work experience without a college science degree, or equivalent combination of related education and required work experience will be considered with management approval.
  • Minimum two years' experience in as a vet technician in general practice or research facility with experience in an operating room environment, post-op care or animal triage
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent preferred.
  • AALAS certification or commitment to attaining certification within 18 months of start date.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and move heavy equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to stand and move (e.g. walk, bend, reach, lift, crouch, push, pull, lift.) throughout an entire work shift
  • Ability to perform, observe, and audit necropsy, surgical, and medical procedures
  • Manual dexterity (e.g. feeling, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion) to operate necessary equipment and perform essential tasks outlined in position description
  • Required to have close visual acuity (e.g. preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small parts) and depth perception (with or without glasses/contacts)
  • Required utilization of provided personal protection equipment (PPE)
  • Occasional exposure to potential hazards such as hot water, steam, mechanical equipment, biological substances, loud noise, odors, chemicals, and to range of outdoor weather conditions

  • Regular on-site attendance as scheduled by management

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range is $21-$31/hr and will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
