Job Description

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Lead Almost Home Kids

Full time, day shift. Chicago location.

The Lead Clinical Nursing Assistant (CNA) works under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse (RN) to provide care for children/families with acute and chronic diseases/disorders found in the pediatric and adolescent populations into the young adult population. The lead CNA will work collaboratively with the clinical support staff to prioritize patient care. The Lead CNA is responsible to make certain the child's clinical care plan is followed and to ensure daily care is completed in a thorough and timely manner. The lead CNA actively supports the hospitals and the department's quality goals and service excellence principles.

Min Quals:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Certification as a CNA (nursing assistant) required

  • Must be able to safely immobilize children, if necessary, and be able to move equipment and children; must respond quickly to child care situations; must effectively communicate with children/families, physicians, and child care staff; must meet professional image and communication standards.

  • Bilingual ability is preferred.

  • Basic life-support certification required.

Job Duties

  • Plans daily care and activities in collaboration with the RN.

  • Takes vital signs, including temperature, heart rate, and respirations as directed by RN.

  • Obtains weights and heights on children upon admission, once or twice weekly, and PRN.

  • Documents weights, vital signs, and other delegated items on appropriate flow sheets. Communicates with the RN about any concerns.

  • Provides comforting and compassion at all times.

  • Makes routine physical observations of all children to determine their needs, and works with the RN on duty to prioritize their care.

  • Provides daily skin, hair, and oral care; bathes or showers child daily and PRN; dresses child appropriately for weather and for the time of day or night.

  • Checks and changes diapers every two hours and PRN; provides skin and perineal care with every diaper change and PRN; applies protective creams as directed by RN.

  • Applies monitoring equipment as delegated by the RN. Maintains the equipment in a safe fashion.

  • Rotates pulse oximetry probe a minimum of every two hours and PRN.

  • Does not turn alarms or equipment off unless delegated by the RN.

  • Cleans and maintains portable and bedside suction equipment.

  • Cleans and maintains the child's environment of care, including beds, clothes, closets, drawers, extra supplies, toys, etc.

  • Prepares food and either supervises or feeds the children that can eat by mouth or who may require assistance.

  • Transports the children in wheelchairs, strollers, and wagons, and assists children using walkers.

  • Transfers children to various seating devices or other orthopedic devices as delegated by the RN.

  • Promotes safety by using two persons to transfer any child over 40 pounds or any child who may need additional assistance due to physical condition.

  • Applies orthopedic devices such as ankle-foot orthosis, thoracolumbosacral orthosis, and various splints as delegated by the RN.

  • Provides passive range-of-motion exercises or other ordered exercises as delegated by the RN.

  • Promotes the developmental well-being of children by offering various experiences and various opportunities for engaging in different activities with volunteers and other staff.

  • Engages with the children for socialization, play time, reading and movie time, outside time, etc.

  • Responsible for other job-related duties as assigned.
