Job Description Summary:The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are renowned institutions committed to advancing scientific knowledge, engineering innovation, and medical research. We are pleased to offer an exceptional summer opportunity exclusively for motivated undergraduate students. Our purpose is to provide you with an immersive experience, working alongside experts, contributing to impactful projects, and gaining insights into the forefront of science, engineering, and medicine.

We invite talented and driven undergraduate students to participate in our prestigious College Student Hire program at the National Academies. This 6 to 8-week program from June 10 - August 2 (based on unit's needs) offers a unique chance to collaborate with leading experts, contribute to impactful projects, and gain valuable exposure to the process behind of providing relevant advice to policy makers on the most relevant issues in science, engineering, and medicine facing the nation today.

The Communications Intern will support efforts to amplify the visibility of NAS programs, events, resources, and membership activities through creative and engaging digital content including social media posts, innovative social media campaigns, and multimedia content.

Application Process:
To be considered for the National Academies College Student Hire Internship, submit your application including a resume or CV, a cover letter detailing your interests and motivations, and your academic transcripts. Applicants should be prepared to provide up to three letters of recommendation from professors or advisors. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in interviews.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Draft social media posts for the Academy's X, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram accounts, highlighting NAS programs, events, member news, and online content.
  • Assist in developing social media campaigns celebrating occasions such as AAPI Heritage Month and National Cancer Research Month, leveraging opportunities to spotlight the work of NAS members and initiatives.
  • Create eye-catching graphics and multimedia content to enhance social media posts.
  • Assist in tracking weekly and monthly social media analytics to evaluate post performances and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Monitor news, trends, and engagement on social media to identify opportunities to amplify content and build audiences.
  • Contribute to the development of email newsletters.
  • Participate in division team meetings and brainstorming sessions to learn more about cross-divisional activities and consider how to increase their online visibility.
  • Attend cross-divisional meetings to stay informed on Academies-wide communications activities and provide updates on NAS communications plans.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital marketing trends.
  • Proficiency in graphic design tools such as Canva and Photoshop.
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated with a creative mindset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge or interest in science/science communications.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge. Current enrollment in a college or university program.

Minimum Experience: None.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification, or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to an Associate Program Officer, Program Officer, or Senior Program Officer. Supervisor is available to organize work, set objectives, and assist in problem resolution.

Compensation: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. The compensation for this position is $18.00 per hour.

Work Environment: Hybrid office/telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 40%, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities.
