REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Traffic Signal Technician.

The Traffic Signals Technician provides a challenging and rewarding opportunity within the Public Works Department with plenty of room for learning and growth within the Traffic Engineering Division. The Traffic Signals Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of electronic traffic control devices; responds to emergency situations regarding traffic signals, school zone flashers and street lights; assists in training signal crew members. Work is performed with limited supervision. Performs other duties and on-call situations. Must be able to work at heights from 6 to 55 feet.


General Description
Assembles, installs, services, tests, repairs and adjusts electrical and mechanical components of traffic signal and related equipment.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires one (1) year in electrical maintenance work or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit is required at time of hire. A valid "Class B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of hire and maintained for duration of appointment.

Preferences

Possession of an IMSA Level II and/or Level III certificate.
At least two years of experience in traffic signals maintenance work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Performs preventive maintenance on traffic signals; cleans and oils controller mechanisms, checks relays; replaces signal bulbs and lenses; installs and maintains overhead traffic signs; operates necessary equipment required for the installation of traffic control devices.

Assembles and installs traffic detectors, signal heads, controllers, amplifiers, relays, and associated aerial and underground wiring; tests and adjusts components as required.

Responds and drives to trouble calls from central dispatch or supervisor; gathers tools and materials for daily jobs and load truck with items; communicates with central dispatch and/or supervisor over radio about trouble report; troubleshoots and repairs malfunctions at job site (intersection, school flasher, fire house flasher).

Reports and inputs tasks that were completed from assignment or trouble report.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to electrical shocks; heights.
