Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Builds and develops prototypes working with Project Engineers. Supports test lab by constructing fixtures and mounting test samples. Supports production with detail modification, and assembly build.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Studies blueprints, specifications or sketches of the product or part to be processed, carefully examining and measuring available models. May make or revise parts to be used as models in the construction of dies and tooling.
  • Assemble transit products and prototypes for production and prototype parts.
  • Inspect and test products to verify conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Produce prototype parts per print specifications using lathe, mill, power saws, tube bender, MIG, TIG, drill, and hand tools.
  • Form sheet metal parts on break press.
  • Performs machine, bench, assembly, and fitting operations or directs others in such performance as instructed.
  • Devise and construct tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures, or modify existing tools and equipment.
  • Rework or alter component model or parts as required to ensure that products meet standards.
  • Carefully checks all dimensions of dies, tools, jigs, and fixtures, and sets up and performs operations or checks the set-up and operations to make sure they properly perform the purpose for which they are intended.
  • Align, fit, and join parts, using bolts and screws or by welding or gluing.
  • Consult and confer with engineering personnel to discuss developmental problems and to recommend product modifications.
  • Record specifications, production operations, and final dimensions of models for use in establishing operating standards and procedures.
  • Assist in building production products as an overflow for operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Journeyman's Card in Tool and Die preferred.
  • 8+ years of applicable experience including model making, prototyping, R&D or similar.
  • CAD experience required; SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Pass welding test for MIG and TIG.
  • Ability to pass certification for operating a pallet lift truck.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must possess a knowledge of mathematics including trigonometry.
  • Print view software experience.
  • Basic knowledge of MRP software.
  • Draw guidelines or markings on materials or workpieces using patterns or other references.
  • Must be able to read and interpret for others intricate blueprints of products and tool design.
  • Must have exceptional ability to plan and visualize tooling requirements and finished products.
  • Must be capable of performing work requiring concentration and very high degrees of skill and accuracy along with the set-up and performance of all machine and bench operations in the Model Shop.
  • Must own a set of prescribed tools and precision instruments and be capable of maintaining tools and instruments in proper condition.
  • Ability to work regular schedules set forth by the Management team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standing for entire shift.
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to twist, bend, stoop as needed.
  • Safety shoes are required.
  • Safety glasses are required.
  • Hearing Protection as required.
