New Hanover County is seeking an experienced Social Work Supervisor to join the Child Protective Services division of the Social Services department. This position is responsible for supervising the daily performance and activities of social workers. Duties include assigning and evaluating work; monitoring the progress of assigned cases; processing immediate risk situations to children; making appropriate custody decisions; and reviewing case documentation to ensure adherence to state standards; acting as a resource to social workers by fielding inquiries and consultations, and providing expert guidance; and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and monitoring work assignments.

Essential Duties:
  • Supervises two or more full-time staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Coordinates departmental administrative operations which include formulating goals and objectives; assessing trends and needs in workflow; ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations; and monitoring work assignment.
  • Directs and oversees the work activities of a Child Protective Services social work unit to ensure that standards and expectations as defined by state/federal guidelines, NC statutes, and county/agency policies are adhered to.
  • Acts as resource to social workers by fielding inquiries and consultations and providing expert guidance.
  • Coordinates departmental training to include assessing needs; preparing and conducting training programs; and conducting periodic assessments of program effectiveness.
  • Conducts public relations activities by responding to citizen inquiries and representing the department on various boards and committees.
  • Acts as advocate for clients and departmental personnel by intervening in relations with agencies, landlords, health care providers, and community organizations.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.

Hours:
Hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday. Must be available to work during emergency situations.

Salary Information:
Effective July 2023, the
hiring range for this position is $71,920 - $97,091.50. Salary will be determined based on qualifications.. Bilingual candidates are eligible for a differential (5%) when performing Spanish language interpretation during the course of work.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • MSW from an accredited school of social work and 3 years of professional social work experience;
    • or a BSW from an accredited school of social work and 4 years of professional social work experience;
    • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have current, or prior NC child welfare experience.
  • Child Protective Services supervisory experience in a Department of Social Services preferred.
  • Must have good driving record and own transportation.
Licenses/Certifications

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
