Engineer, Transmission

Role Responsibilities
The Transmission Engineer is responsible for the implementation, test, and Tier-2 engineering support of RF, compression, and fibre systems and equipment as may be applicable to the facility in which they are based. Equipment encountered in this position includes, but is not limited to, encoders, modulators, receivers, frequency conversion equipment, RF amplification equipment, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, antenna subsystems, fibre interfaces, and other ancillary satellite and fibre communication equipment.
The Transmission Engineer will, under the guidance and direction of their designated line manager perform the following duties with respect to the company operated satellite, compression and fibre equipment and systems.
Undertake corrective maintenance as necessary to restore any failed equipment to full working order
Undertake preventative maintenance to ensure the transmission systems are fully operational 24x7
Undertake system upgrades to ensure that the transmission systems are operating in-line with manufacturer recommended software and firmware releases
Perform equipment adjustment and tuning to ensure the transmission systems are operating to their correct technical specifications
Liaise with third party vendors (e.g. satellite and fibre providers) during fault resolution and preventative maintenance activities
Closely liaise with Operations to ensure flawless operation though all maintenance and upgrade activities
Liaise with colleagues to ensure a smooth hand-over between shifts and continuity of activities across shifts
Update documentation and drawings as required to maintain the company engineering records
Follow all SOP's during maintenance activities
Provide users and clients with professional, courteous, and timely technical support
Work rotating shifts to provide 24x7 transmission engineering on-site presence
Other transmission engineering duties as may be assigned by the line manager or engineering management
Required Experience
The candidate should have at least two years prior experience which is relevant to the position, the degree of experience will determine the internal level at which the candidate may be employed.
Preferred Experience
It would be preferred that the candidate also has knowledge and experience in working with IP technologies, both LAN and WAN including long haul Telco circuits. Experience with LTN, Zixi, SRT and similar technologies is also an advantage, as is experience with bonded cellular technologies.
Required Skills, Education and/or Certifications
The candidate should have the following skills and qualifications:
Technical knowledge of RF frequency bands, link budgets, antenna and amplifier equipment
and/or
Technical knowledge of MPEG encoders, multiplexors, conditional access, ASI, and TSoIP
and/or
Technical knowledge of SONET, multi and single mode fibre, IP routing, IP multicast
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, and ideally AutoCAD
Preferred Skills, Education, and/or Certifications
The candidate should have the following skills and qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. electronic engineering or electrical engineering) would be preferred
Certification in IP (CCNA or similar) would be beneficial
Certification in manufacturer specific systems relevant to Encompass (Synamedia, Commscope, etc.) would be beneficial
