Position Description

Salary - $12.04 per hour

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary variable employees to supplement our permanent workforce. These variable employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.

The definition of a Variable Employee:
*Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
*Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
*NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).

Under direct supervision, the Police Aide performs general and routine police-related duties, renders assistance to the public, and performs traffic safety work. Investigates and documents certain types of non-criminal incidents.
Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Directs, controls and regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic at intersections, school crossing zones, and City parking facilities; places and removes police barricades, and traffic control signs to ensure safety of individuals crossing or operating vehicles on hazardous streets.
  • Obtains and gathers initial information to assist in the preparation of official police reports regarding non-criminal incidents such as found or lost property; creates files and ensures all information is accurately documented and organized.
  • Provides directions to visitors and tourists; answers questions and concerns; directs individuals to appropriate areas and to the necessary individuals.
  • Assists, supports, and participates in school safety programs.
  • Performs special duties during parades and other special events; assists department with safety procedures and keeping order for various special programs.
  • Operates and uses a police radio and other police equipment; summons and calls a police officer for various criminal and non-criminal matters as required.
  • Performs security patrols of public facilities; monitors activities of pedestrians and tactfully addresses problems.
  • Operates and uses Police Department vehicles as necessary for the performance of duties.
  • Towing and deployment of trailered message boards and other department-maintained equipment.
  • Flexible work schedule with the expectation you will be available to assist with department training and special events, which may occur during holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
Must be at least 19 years of age or older.

Employees selected for this position must meet FDLE guidelines in order to access sensitive and/or confidential information. Applicants with arrest histories for felonies or serious misdemeanors may be denied access to this information and as such, will not meet the minimum qualifications for a position with the City of Clearwater.

This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides: Fax machine, copy machine, personal computer, related software, handheld radio, vehicles, and other equipment as assigned.

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
