Position Description

HOURLY RATE: $15.00 per hour
Additional pay for certifications obtained:
Lifeguard Certification - $0.25 per hour
Water Safety Instructor - $0.25 per hour
Emergency Medical Responder/Emergency Medical Technician - $0.25 per hour

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary variable employees to supplement our permanent workforce. These variable employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.

The definition of a Variable Employee - Pool Guard:
*Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
*Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
*NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).

Variable public safety work in the enforcement of regulations and protection of life at municipal pools.

An employee in this classification exercises responsibility for the safety of swimmers and non-swimmers using pools, and for rendering assistance in emergencies. Work is Variable in nature and is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations governing the public use of City pools and adjacent areas. Supervision is received from a superior who makes work assignments and reviews work by observation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Observes pool area from an observation tower or other assigned station, keeping a sharp lookout for persons in need of assistance.
  • Rescues persons in distress.
  • Applies resuscitation techniques and renders first aid.
  • Dispenses information to the public regarding pool regulations and activities.
  • Teaches and directs various aquatics activities as assigned.
  • Enforces pool regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in pool area.
  • May collect and deposit program registration and admission fees.
  • Prepares reports as necessary.
  • May be required to work at other pool sites or during city wide special events.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or certification from a nationally recognized aquatic training agency
  • Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED, and First Aid.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate is preferred.
  • Previous Pool Guard, Swimming Instructor or related work experience preferred.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of approved water rescue methods and specific first aid and resuscitation techniques.

Considerable skill in swimming and water rescue.

Ability to perform all types of pool rescue.

Ability to rapidly learn departmental rules and regulations and to exercise tact, firmness and good judgment in enforcing rules and regulations.

Ability to teach and direct various aquatics activities.

Physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job duties.
