Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Engineering and Maintenance, the Ferry Project Engineer will act as marine technical resources for issues related to Golden Gate Ferry Fleet. This position will be assigned to high-dollar complex vessel projects that require complicated processes, such as but not limited to, developing and/or overseeing the preparation of specifications, drawings, and procurement documents necessary to advertise, proceed to competitive bid, and manage the project through completion.   

 

This position will liaise with regulatory and classification bodies; administer vessel technical information; provide project management and engineering support for maintenance; repair activities; regulatory and vetting inspections and capital improvements.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Works with the Director to inspect Ferry Division assets to develop capital improvement plans and   dry dock schedules.
  • Conducts research on relevant regulatory issues and support development of compliance plans.
  • Manages sub-contractors working on Ferry Division assets within schedule and budget constraints.    
  • Responsible for working with the Director and the procurement staff to ensure all sub­ contracting and materials are procured as per the District guidelines.
  • Performs quality control inspections of all maintenance work, subcontractor and shipyard work. Subcontractor and shipyard quality control shall be a shared responsibility with the Director at the direction of the Director.
  • Consistent with industry practices and mechanics safety manual, ensures that all maintenance work is completed following established safe working practices working utilizing the proper PPE for all mechanics and subcontractors. 
  • Closely manages and keeps both the Director of Maintenance and Operations Department apprised of all situations that affect a vessel’s usage. Any deficiency that could possibly be deemed a “no sail items by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) shall be closely managed with all involved parties updated as required to have the least impact on operations. 
  • In conjunction with the Director, determines when and where vessels will be removed from service so that work can be scheduled accordingly.
  • Leads efforts to ensure engineering documentation is current, accurate, accessible and organized.
  • Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service. 
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related engineering field. Qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis in lieu of required education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years full-time experience in the marine industry.
  • Experience with maintaining vessels in accordance with USCG and various State/Federal regulations.

 


Required License:  

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record.

              

Physical Requirement:  

This position should be available for immediate callout situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as required to support operations. Also, should have the ability to travel domestically on an immediate notice possibly for extended periods of time. Requires frequent and extensive physical activities such as lifting and manipulating up to 50 lbs., bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing, gripping, and other movements related to essential duties. Working inside and outside in all weather conditions. Work around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment. Ability to wear a respirator.
